Liposuction is a very popular cosmetic procedure designed to remove stubborn, unwanted fat. It targets specific areas of the body to achieve a more sculpted and defined appearance. For men and women who have excellent health and have already tried diet and exercise, liposuction may be the answer for addressing those resistant fatty deposits.
How is liposuction performed?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body. Patients commonly target excess fat in their:
The procedure itself is performed as an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia in our accredited, award-winning surgical suite located within our Artemedica Santa Rosa office. During the procedure, Dr. Tran inserts a thin tube called a cannula through small incisions at the treatment site. The cannula is then used to gently suction out the targeted fat cells for a smoother, more contoured appearance.
Liposuction and fat grafting
Fat grafting is a specialized form of liposuction that transfers the location of stubborn, unwanted fat to more desirable areas. Rather than turn to implants, many patients prefer fat grafting for breast and buttock augmentation. Because fat grafting uses your body’s own fat rather than silicone or saline implants, the results are usually much more natural.
During your consultation, Dr. Tran will discuss whether fat grafting is a suitable option for you. Good candidates for fat grafting will have overall excellent health as well as excess fat suitable for liposuction.
What to expect after liposuction?
Following surgery, you will experience bruising, redness, swelling and sensitively, particularly around the suction sites. For the first week following surgery, you will also experience some pain and discomfort which can be managed with proper medication and ice.
You will also be required to wear a compression garment. The compression garment will ensure better, more even results and help your skin adjust to the loss of volume beneath. You should expect to wear the garment 24/7 for at least 2-3 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks, depending on the extent of your surgery.
Important considerations
- Liposuction is a permanent procedure. Once a fat cell is removed, it does not grow back. Therefore, any results obtained by liposuction are permanent as well. However, any existing fat cells may still grow and/or shrink with changes in diet or exercise, so a healthy diet and lifestyle are key for optimal results.
- Liposuction is one of many cosmetic procedures that can alter the shape of your body. While it can help you achieve the look you’ve always wanted, liposuction isn’t right for every situation. Liposuction is usually reserved for stubborn, unwanted fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.
- Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss. It is ideal for those already at a healthy weight who struggle with pockets of stubborn fat.
- Liposuction only enhances body proportions. It cannot address loose, excess skin nor significantly improve overall weight.
