Hair loss and thinning are common problems for both men and women across the country. Approximately 80 million Americans of all ages suffer from male- or female-pattern baldness and this condition becomes increasingly more prevalent after age 50. As of right now, there are many options for treating hair loss including cosmetics like hair fillers, transplants, wigs and toupees, and medication. However, one such treatment is becoming increasing popular due to its scientific backing: plasma-rich platelet (PRP) hair restoration injections. And we like it, because PRP hair restoration is:
How does PRP help hair restoration?
There are two key components to platelet-rich plasma and they are both 100% natural and come from your own body: plasma: the liquid part of your blood, and platelets: a type of blood cell vital to your body’s healing process and full of growth properties.
PRP is your own blood with a higher concentration of your own growth promoting platelets. By injecting a small sample of platelet-rich plasma into your scalp, you increase the supply of nutrient-rich blood directly to the hair follicle and increase the thickness of the hair shaft. And because PRP hair restoration uses your body’s own natural healing and regenerative properties, they are perfect for both men and women with thinning hair or mild to moderate pattern baldness. Our patients request PRP hair restoration treatments to help with:
PRP hair restoration treatment at Artemedica
On the day of your appointment, one of our trained clinicians will draw a small amount of your blood—typically from your arm. This blood is then spun in a centrifuge for approximately 10 minutes in order to separate out the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of your blood. Your specific PRP sample is then injected into the scalp after numbing with a local anesthetic. Treatment generally takes less than an hour. Amazing results are noticeable after just a few of these non-invasive treatments, providing a welcome boost in confidence.
Recovery after your PRP treatment
PRP hair restoration requires no downtime, similar to having your blood drawn at the hospital. You may feel some discomfort around the injection site once the local anesthetic wears off. However, this should resolve itself within a few hours. Refrain from washing the treated areas for 48 hours to give it time to heal and be gentle when shampooing.
Results
Due to the nature of PRP treatments, which relies on natural healing and regeneration, results are not immediate. However, most patients report thicker hair and less shedding even after just their first treatment. In some cases, new hair growth appears in the treated areas. While results will vary, in order to get the best results from your PRP hair restoration therapy, you should seek a minimum of 3 treatments spaced out 4-6 weeks. Some patients require additional maintenance treatments every 4-6 months post-initial treatment.
